The Falun - Röros Expedition
A Historic Journey with horse and sled

For over a thousand years they trudged through the winter landscape, steam rising off the horses broad backs, fur clad men urging them on as they pulled the heavily loaded sleds along the winter trail. Like today's truck drivers hauling goods across the country, these trail drivers transported goods from Dalarna in Sweden, via the mountain market town, Röros, to the ice free port of Trondheim, Norway and back again. There were no roads, no railways, but the one-horse drawn sleds that glided through the snowy woods and across the frozen lakes could carry the valuable but heavy loads of iron and iron goods to Trondheim and from there out into the world.
On February 2, 2003, 30 men and women, from the Dalarna Femund Forkörarförening (The Trail Drivers Club) left the city of Falun in Sweden, with 17 horses pulling old-style sleds, and drove out into the forest. Eighteen cold, foggy days later a group of tired but happy trail drivers arrived at the historic market in Röros, Norway, welcomed by thousands of happy market goers.
Join us on the ancient trail and experience the beauty of the Scandinavian countryside, the camaraderie and laughter along the way, and the music of the Dalarna Femund Trail Driver Players.

You did beautiful work with the film, Stephan.  It's quite a tribute to the trail drivers to have this record of their place in history.

Hej Stefan!

Dear Stefan,

We enjoyed the presentation and the chance to visit with you at the
American Swedish Institute last Saturday evening and I have viewed the
description of the trip and its backround on your Homepage.  We purchased
the video and look forward to viewing it again as well as showing it to our
friends. So thank you.
But I had a few questions.
1) How did the crew and the horses return to Falun? Were they trucked back
and the crew by train, or how. I don't think they drove their sleds back.
2) At that time of year it is dark in Sweden for 18 or more hours per day.
Did that cause any problems for the crew, and what hours of the day were
they traveling? Were most of your pictures taken during daylight hours, or
is your film and camera equipment fast enough to get the action in the dark.
3) At the height of the caravan experience, how many sleds would there be
operating over the route in the winter months? Did they also operate
primarily in the dark?
4) It is strange that in my books on the history of Sweden, I find no
mention ot these caravan trade route activities. What were the years of
operation of these caravans.

Thank you very much for a very interesting new exposure to life in early
Sweden. I will appreciate it if you have the time to respond to some of my
questions.

Sincerely,
John Erickson

I was at the Sjolunden Svensk camp at Bemeji & ordered the film. It arrived yesterday & I was overcome with emotion upon viewing it.  My Swedish heritage, is sthere.  Thank you for a wonderful film.

I intend to show the film at the Scandinavian Society meeting, so you may receive request for more from here in the greater Kansas City area.  Again I want to thank you for your work in capturing the feel of my heritage.  My family was from Ardala, Elkistuna & Flen areas.  The family name is Bergstrom, but my maiden name was Liljeblad.(Finn-Swede)  Kay Zingsheim

I just watched this film and it was sooo good.  Thanks for doing it.

Har i kväll sett på den vackra och mycket trevliga filmen om resan Falun-Röros 2003. Jag skulle gärna vilja ha en version av filmen, men då på DVS. Kommer den att finnas på DVD någon gång?
