Man and Bear
52 minutes
Our relationship with the brown
bear is an ambiguous one. Ranchers hate them, hunters covet them,
they fascinate researchers, and some grassroots activists have
mistakenly considered them to be living teddy bears, gentle and
harmless. Legends, movies and television have depicted the bear as
everything from a cuddly toy to a raging monster. How dangerous are
they? Is it possible for humans and bears to co-exist in the same
area? If so, what can be done to cut down on the potential conflict
that arises when humans invade bear country? Today we know more about bears and their behavior. We
know that the bear is not our brother, neither is it our enemy. But
will we use our newfound knowledge to save this magnificent
animal?

The
Colorado River
Stolen Treasure
52
minutes
From
its source high in the Rocky Mountains, the Colorado river twists
and turns,
passing through five states and Mexico, before spilling into the
Pacific Ocean.
A
spectacular labyrinth of gorges and canyons have been cut into the
landscape by the river and it’s tributaries. The longest and most
magnificent of these is, of course, the Grand Canyon. On Friday,
August 13, 1869, John Wesley Powell, preparing for his entrance into
the canyon, wrote in his diary, “And what a world of grandeur
is spread before us!
Below is the canyon through which the Colorado runs.
We are ready to start our way down the great unknown..” Today
we know what lies behind every turn, but the journey down the river
is still awesomely thrilling.

The Falun - Röros Expedition
A Historic Journey with Horse and Sled
49 minutes
For over a thousand years they trudged through the winter
landscape, steam rising off the horses broad backs, fur clad men urging
them on as they pulled the heavily loaded sleds along the winter trail.
Like today's truck drivers hauling goods across the country, these trail
drivers transported goods from Dalarna in Sweden, via the mountain market
town, Röros, to the ice free port of Trondheim, Norway and back again.
There were no roads, no railways, but the one-horse drawn sleds that
glided through the snowy woods and across the frozen lakes could carry the
valuable but heavy loads of iron and iron goods to Trondheim and from
there out into the world.
On February 2, 2003, 30 men and women, from the Dalarna Femund
Forkörarförening (The Trail Drivers Club) left the city of Falun in
Sweden, with 17 horses pulling old-style sleds, and drove out into the
forest. Eighteen cold, foggy days later a group of tired but happy trail
drivers arrived at the historic market in Röros, Norway, welcomed by
thousands of happy market goers.
Join us on the ancient trail and experience the beauty of the Scandinavian
countryside, the camaraderie and laughter along the way, and the music of
the Dalarna Femund Trail Driver Players.

Searching for the Latifies Viper / 30 min
A film by Claes Andrén
A Nature production 2006
In 1976 Prof. Claes Andrén, researcher and
filmmaker, travelled to Iran together with fellow researcher,
Prof. Göran Nilson. While producing four films for the Swedish
Television they were also able to do some exciting research. One
of the reptiles they were able to study was the recently
identified Latifis Viper that is unique to the Lar Valley in the
Alborz Mountains. Dam construction in the area threatened the
viper´s existence. War and political instability have made it
impossible to search for the viper to see if it survived.
Supported by the National Geopgraphic Society they undertook two
new expeditions, the first in the year 2000 and the second in
2002. After a difficult search they succeeded in locating the
Latifis Viper that has managed to survive in the Lar Valley.

Survival / 50 min
A film by Claes Andrén and Ulf Jonasson
A Nature / Vildmarksforum / SVT production 2008
Three million years ago the land bridge linking
Gibraltar to Northern Africa collapsed. An enormous tidal wave
rushed in and created what is now the Mediterranean Sea. On the
island of Milos a large viper has survived. Researchers Claes
Andrén and Göran Nilson were commissioned by the Bern Convention
to study the Milos Viper. The viper has managed to survive on a
food source that becomes available on Milos for a short time
during the spring and the fall. Another predator, the Eleonora
Falcon, prey on the same food source to raise its young. Claes
Andrén, researcher and wildlife cinematographer, and Ulf
Jonasson, wildlife cinematographer and wilderness expert, have
spent three years studying and filming these two predators and
